Bill Gates-Backed Carbon Capture Plant Does The Work Of 40 Million Trees
Carbon Engineering is a company out of British Columbia that is creating clean fuel out of air.
The company is backed by Bill Gates and other oil giants like Chevron, BHP, and Occidental.
They use a combination of giant fans and complex chemical processes to remove carbon dioxide from the air in a procedure known as Direct Air Capture.
How Does Direct Air Capture Work?
“Like most forms of carbon capture and storage, direct air capture relies on three main technologies for separating the carbon dioxide from the air. Direct air capture of carbon dioxide (DAC) is a carbon capture technique which produces a concentrated CO2 gas stream from ambient air. Generally, ambient air flows through a filter where either adsorption, absorption or mineralization removes the CO2 from the air. This concentrated CO2 stream may be sequestered or reused for enhanced oil recovery to produce low carbon fuel. When DAC is combined with a carbon capture system, it can produce a negative emissions plant.”
When Will Carbon Engineering Go Global?
“In 2021, following commercial validation, CE will move to deploy the first full scale, commercial AIR TO FUELS™ facilities that directly synthesize liquid fuels, and supply them to end users within existing transportation fuels infrastructure and markets. CE envisions building individual facilities with a capacity of 2000 barrels per day, and deploying first projects in leading markets such as British Columbia and California where existing Low Carbon Fuel Standards favour clean fuels such as CE’s. As global transportation markets move to cut emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, we see an immense opportunity to deploy AIR TO FUELS™ facilities globally.” – Carbon Engineering
